Te Taiao o Tamaki - Whole of a Set

Walt: Identify and sort fractions of a number.

This week we have been learning about Fractions and our class is really average at fractions. So we decide to work on word problems so we can get some knowledge that we need to know about fractions so we can move up a level. At the end of the year, we should be at level 7 or 8 because those are the levels we are suppose to be on. The work was kind of difficult, but I managed my time to do it by myself so I can improve more on my maths work.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Kiwi Kids News 2K17

Walt: Find evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand key themes and messages.

Our task was to finish everything off before we could come onto this work. I was an early bird so I had to finish it off. Once you have finished everything else, we had to do a Recall and Thinking to each text that we read and making sure that our answers are correct. Then we had to post our answers in our own presentations that we have created on our own. The work was really difficult, but at the same time, it was easy because I managed to go through some questions.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Add Using Doubles

Walt: Use doubles to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.

Mrs Judd was trying to warm our heads up so we can get started with our maths, we had to work on our addition and subtraction just so Mrs Judd knows that we know the simple ones before we go onto other hard working problems. We also had to check our addition and subtraction properly so that people can see if we are right or not.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Blog Post

What I think "Te Taiao o Tamaki?" means for me is that we need to help people to stop polluting our waters and oceans because we never know if fresh water will still be around in the future. The reason why Mr Burt chose this topic "Te Taiao o Tamaki" is because not enough people are looking after our environment and they are not taking care of our trees and birds.

The environment is really important to us locals, but the only way we can save our fresh water is to stop polluting our oceans and take our rubbish into bins so our environment could be clean and fresh. Oceans, Streams, Lakes and Rivers are no dumping places where you can throw your rubbish everywhere, that is why we have bins. Make sure you or your friend are doing the right thing and not dumping your rubbish on the ground.

That is why lot's of our beautiful sea creatures and land animals are dying because we are not putting out rubbish in the right places and also we need to stop polluting the air or ocean because it is very dangerous and we never know if their will be any fresh water left in the whole wide world. This is what "Te Taiao o Tamaki" means to me and what "The Environment of Tamaki" is.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Who my role model is and why?

Walt: Plan for a piece of explanation writing.
- Use the' Title - Introduction - Information - Conclusion (TIIC) structure.
“Who is your role model?”. There is only one person that I really look up to and he is my role model. “Why are they so important to you and why do you look up to them?”, there are lot’s of reasons why people have role models, it is because they want to be just like them or they want something that their role model has.

My role model is Osamu Tezuka. The reason why I look up to him is because his talents are splendid and he created something that nobody can take away from him. I’ve always looked up to him because he created Anime and I’ve always wanted the same talent as him. In life, I want to create my own Manga and Anime to show people he was a great and creative person.

Osamu Tezuka teaches people about life through his animated work and to show people what life's all about. I have always been inspired by his beautiful work. His animated cartoons have helped me to understand what life can be and how hard people try to do their best in anything they come across.

He teaches me that life is not a game and that you need to take it very seriously. In the future, you will need to work every day to be able to do things that you have always wanted to do in life. He encouraged me that I can try new things that I have never done before, he has also showed me that I can do anything in the future.

These are the reasons why I look up to Osamu Tezuka and why he plays an important role in my life. He is one of the role model that I look up to and I have lot’s of information why he is a role model to me. I always look up to him because he is a very special person to me. So, “Who is your role model and why are they so important to you?”

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Thirst by Paul Mason

Walt: Find Evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand the key themes and messages.

In Mrs Ilaoa's literacy class, we were reading a text called thirst that has a little boy who steals another family's water from their tank because he is trying to help his family out. The reason being, is because his family is poor and they have no money to pay the company to bring water to their house. The little boy and his little sister's uniforms have not been washed for a month because they don't have enough water to even take a shower. Then we had to do a Character Web that explains everything about the main character. Also we had to answer a lot of questions that we had to think really hard about.

Water Worries - Helping Friends to Save Water

Walt: Find Evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand the key themes and messages.
Task: Our task was to create another google drawing to make it for us friends to remind them that they have to save water and to not waste it. The reason why we can't waste water is because we need it in our daily lives and we can't survive without it if we don't have it around us because water is to help us survive. We can save water by turning off the tap if we don't really need it when we are brushing our teeths. Take shorter showers so then we could save more water.

Water Worries - Letter to the Council

Dear Council,

We have a lot of worries about the amount of water that we have and the water on earth covers more than ⅔ of the earth. One of the most things that we need to worry about is that their is only about 97 percent on the planet is all saltwater, when their is about 3 percent of the planet’s total water supply is freshwater.

Another worry of the citizens on earth is that their are some people wasting our precious water and it will concern us if we can ever learn how to save water without wasting the water. We also need to learn that rivers, lakes, streams and oceans are not our rubbish and they are meant to be respected.

The reason why most of our beautiful beaches and oceans are polluted is because we are not respecting them and keeping it clean. We need to always remember that every drop of water counts and never to waste our water.

What I would like to ask of you, is to try and fix this problem. We are starting to lose lot’s of our water, we cannot survive without water because it is an important source to help us stay alive and never get dehydrated. What I also want is for people to treat water properly and never try polluting our water or throwing rubbish into the oceans.

Sincerely,

From Roimata.

The Water Cycle - Water Worries Activity

Walt: Find Evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand key themes and messages.
Task: Our task was to use Google Drawings to create what a Water Cycle is and what are the process for each cycle. It was a little hard because we had other things to do, I have learn a lot about water and why it is so important for us. I also found some really interesting facts that we need water in our daily lives and it is important to us because it helps us to survive and it keeps us hydrated at all times.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Water Worries

Walt: Find evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand key themes and messages.

This week in Mrs lloa's literacy class, we have been really busy with working on with both of our reading presentations. Also this week, we had lot's of things we had to do so then we could understand what we are reading about and we could use that knowledge in both of our texts. We had to understand the key themes and also had to examine through the texts to get our answers so we can answer our questions properly. They're were also some hidden messages in the text while we were reading it.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Factions Word Problems

Walt: Identify and sort fractions of a number.

Task: Our task was to work out how we got the answer, either by doing our work in our maths books or take a screenshot to show how we worked out the question. It took a little while because we had to think really hard to use different other ways to work out the answer.  The thing that I could find really difficult was working out the last 2 questions because I needed a lot of time to solve the problem. I really enjoyed doing fractions because I'm starting to get my fractions a lot and I also think that it will help me with the rest of my maths.

Explanation Planning

Walt: Plan for a piece of explanation writing.
- Use the' Title-Introduction-Information-Conclusion (TIIC) structure.
Task: Our task was to use an Explanation Planning to plan on what we will write on our Writing Template. The reason why we had to plan first before writing is because we needed to know what we were going to write for our writing and that it helps us because it will have all of the information that we need to explain about the topic. The hard part for me was coming up with a Introduction and a Conclusion to write in my writing because I didn't have any ideas, until I finally came up with something I could use.

Why we need to bring a healthy lunch to school?

Walt: Plan for a piece of explanation writing.
- Use the' Title-Introduction-Information-Conclusion (TIIC) structure.

“Why is it so important to bring a healthy lunch to school?”, “What does eating healthy lunch give you?”, Well, it is really important to bring a healthy lunch to school everyday because it helps you have a healthy life and it also gives you a really good well-balanced diet for you. Having a healthy lunch gives you the support to focus on your learning and it helps you to have a great mind and to also get ready for the upcoming things.

A healthy lunch can give a child the energy they need to stay focused, pay attention in class, and learn the information presented to them after lunch. Healthier school lunches would lead to healthier nutritional choices throughout the child’s entire lifetime.

By making healthy school lunches the norm as opposed to the exception. Children will inadvertently learn about nutrition and healthy eating. Healthy lunches with proper portions can help support a healthy life. Therefore, it is important to ensure that lunch is a well-balanced meal to ensure that your child receives good nutrition.

School lunches that provides more calories than a child needs to maintain their body weight which can lead to weight gain and obesity. Children who are overweight have increased risks of developing health problems like Diabetes and Hypertension.

These are all the reasons why we should bring a healthy lunch to school because it gives us a lot of nutritional to help us with anything in our lives and also for the future. These things would help you have a nutritional life and a better life if you want to stay healthy.

Water Wise Poster

Walt: I make sense of new information before, during, and after reading by connecting it to myself, texts, I know and my world.
Task: Our task was to finish off the Water Wise presentation and go onto the last slide to get some ideas on how we can make a poster about saving our water and making sure we are using them wisely. Here is my poster that I have created myself to show people what water is worth and to tell the whole world to save water because it is really important for our health and that it will help us to take headaches from our heads.

Water Wise

Walt: I make sense of new information before, during, and after reading by connecting it to myself, texts I know and my world.

Task: Our task was to read through 4 texts that was provided for us from our teacher. The 4 texts that Mrs lloa provided for us had lots of information to explain everything to us about water and why it is so important to drink lots of water whenever we are dehydrated sometimes. What I have learnt from this presentation is that we need to save our water's more often because we will never know when we won't have as much water as we usually have.

Why people need to drink water?

Walt: Plan for a piece of explanation writing. Use the 'Title - Introduction - Conclusion (TIIC) structure.

The topic is “Why is it so important for people to drink water?, “Is it healthy for us to drink water daily?”, Yes, it is really important for us to drink water daily because it helps us to focus more on our learning and it also helps us to keep hydrated at all times.

We need to drink water because it helps us survive and our body is about 60 percent of water. Drinking water also helps the skin to do it’s job of regulating the body’s temperature through sweating. Water is an important part of all body functions and processes, including digestion and elimination.

Also combined with fiber, water can cure constipation. To also prevent headaches. Sometimes headaches can be caused by dehydration, so drinking water can prevent or weaken that nasty head pain. Water is important for your bodies survival than food. You can live without water for about one week, but you can survive without food for more than a month.

Drinking at least 8 glasses a day will help rid the body and skin of toxins. Drinking water is important during weight loss because it provides hydration without unwanted calories. But research over the years has suggested that drinking extra water helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea, and toxins from the body.

That is why it is really important to drink lots of water because it keeps you hydrated. That is why there's so much information that explains to you on why drinking water is so important for you and it can help you with your health. Sometimes drinking water can take away the headaches that you have in your head because you haven't drank enough water to keep you hydrated.

Blog Journal Reflection

What have you enjoyed?

What I have enjoyed of these first 2 weeks at school was cool because I got to meet my old teachers and see some new students joining our amazing school. What I also enjoyed was seeing all of my best friends again and getting to talk to them.

What has been difficult?

The only thing that was really difficult for me was seeing the old Year 8's gone into college and they have already parted ways with each other. Another thing that has been really difficult for me was having to say goodbye to our old teachers Miss Clark and Miss Berry. These two really special teachers found their dream jobs.

What is new this year?

There has been many new changes in our school because their are now new students, teachers who have joined our beautiful school to see how we do our learning on our chromebooks. There has also been new changes to our school because we now have new prefects who would lead our school to success.

What's your new classes?

Our new classes that we have this year is kiwisport. What we're doing for kiwi sport is Hockey with our amazing teacher who would be teaching us about the drills and rules and also how to control the ball with your hockey stick. My other new class that I have attended for tech is cooking, cause last year I was in graphics. But I ended up moving to cooking for tech this year.

What are you looking forward too?

What I'm looking forward to for this year is going to the polyfest and going to the Year 8's leadership camp. Another thing that I'm looking forward to for this year is getting new opportunities and trying to achieve my goal. I am wanting to set out my goals for myself so that I can be really successful.

Why do we wear hats at school?

Why do we wear hats at school?

The reason why we need to wear our hats at school because it protects our heads from ever getting sunburnt and also to make sure that we don’t get skin cancer. There are lot’s of reasons why people wear hats for a reason. A hat can help give added coverage for the skin on your ears and neck.

The hat’s are either part of their uniforms, protect their heads, to act as sun shade. The reason why hats act as sun shade because it is to make sure our heads doesn’t get burnt. Skin cancer is a deadly thing, it can lead to highly death, that’s why you always need to take care of yourself and keep yourself healthy.

If you have cancer, then you will have to go to the doctors to get your cancer checked. Skin cancer is a very important thing that you need to take care of because it is very contagious. This is so your face is protected and that you get the littlest opportunity of getting melanoma. It is shown that lots of people get lots of sunburn on their face and neck then any other part of their bodies.

This time is the only time when the sun starts getting really hot and it starts to burn you. The times are 10am till 4pm. Wearing a wide brimmed hat outdoors is a great way to protect your hair, eyes, and skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. While you still need to slather your skin with a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

These are the reasons why Pt England School always wear school hats to make sure that our parents don’t worry about protecting us from the sun because we are wearing our hats to protect our heads from ever getting burnt. Also, the hats can protect our heads from getting skin cancer or melanoma which is a very contagious cancer to get from the sun. We are so lucky that we got hats today because they help us to protect our head from any cancer.

Kete Knowledge Positive Message

Walt: Make connections between our prior knowledge and examples within the text in order to understand more abstract ideas in the text.
Task: Our task was to create a poster that uses the kete as a way to encourage students. What we had to think about was "What's a catchy saying I could create to have this message remembered?, another one was "What images can I create to capture their attention, then our last one was to post the poster onto our blogs with a brief explanation to explain what we are doing in class. What I have learnt from this short reading poster is that if you have something that you really want, but you don't know what to do, you should try hard to achieve your goals.

Kete Knowledge Presentation

Walt: Make connections between our prior knowledge and examples within the text in order to understand more abstract ideas in the text.

Task: Our task was to read through the 4 texts provided and to complete the set tasks to complete our learning evidence. We had to either read or listen to the texts that was provided for us from the teacher. Their were 2 Nga Kete E Toru video's, the first one was put into maori and the last one was translated into english to help some of us who doesn't understand maori. Once we finished reading the texts, we had to work on the presentations by ourselves, but we got some extra help from Mrs Iloa or some of our classmates.

Add Using Doubles

Walt: Use Doubles to help us resolve addition and subtraction

Task: Our task was to add by using our knowledge of doubles. Since we were just starting the week, my group 'Zap' and the other group's work was 'Kapow' because we had to do the same work as them, because our maths teacher Mrs Judd hasn't updated our work yet. Then we had to work out the answer, but at the same time, we had to solve the same problem. What I have learnt today is how to solve problems by using doubles.

Walt: Identify the structural features of an explanation text.
Task: Our task was to reconstruct the explanation explaining how are glass bottles recycled. We had to make sure that we make the explanation flow logically and use image options to change the colour of each text to make sure that they are either concluding statement or opening statement. If their was a concluding text, we had to colour that same paragraph green. If the paragraph was an opening statement, then we had to colour it purple.
