Te Taiao o Tamaki - Water Crisis

Walt: Predicting, I ask questions, skim and scan the text to decide what is important to make and refine predictions. I can predict what will happen if we do / do not try and reduce water.

Our task was to make a copy of this presentation from Mrs Tele'a reading group. Her group was 'Aoraki' and since they are the highest literacy group, we had to read the one text that they had, it was all about the water crisis that is happening only in Auckland. I have learnt lot's of things that happened in Auckland and also why we need to predict the questions and skim & scan the text to decide what is very important to make a refine prediction.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Myths and Legends about the Sea

Walt: Research the various myths and legends that were used to explain features of our environment. Features such as land, our oceans

Our task was to watch 2 video's that was on the Inquiry page of the Team 5 block. We had to watch the 2 video's because they were both related to water and how the Polynesian people found Aotearoa. We had to create our own presentations to gather some information and put them on different slides. It was fun learning some things that I never knew before and also because I got to learn a lot about the myths and legends on how New Zealand became land.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Current Events Template

Walt: Use De Bono's thinking hats to critically examine a current event.

Our task was to use our thinking hats and we had to examine the current events that happened in the book that we were all given from Mrs lloa. We had to answer the questions that was about the current events that happened in the book. I have learnt a lot about novel studies and I enjoyed it a lot. The reason why is because I have learnt a lot about the book and I got a better understanding about what the book is about.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Why do people borrow books from the Library?

Walt: Write a Template on why people borrow books from the Library.
Do you have any reasons why people even borrow books from the library? Today I will be explaining what the importance of borrowing a book from the library is about.

People borrow books because it helps us to keep our brains going and it also helps us in our general knowledge. We also borrow books because it helps us to build our vocabulary and because they enjoy reading books and it is fun. Another reason why people or kids borrow books from the library is because it can be very interesting when you start reading it.

The reason why people borrow books from the library is because you can learn new words that you never knew before and they can be very helpful for us to use in our reading or writing. But the main thing about a book is that you have to understand the book, you also need to try and know the meaning of the word. Borrowing a book could also teach you things about the world.

A book can be very interesting and fascinating sometimes, but most times, it’s not about how cool it is, it is all about making sure that you can understand the book. But another reason why people borrow books is because it develops our skills and we can get plenty of knowledge from it. Sometimes borrowing a book can help you to gain information that you never knew before.

These are the reasons why people borrow books from the Library and why it is so important for us to read books and what they can help us with. I don’t think the reason why people borrowing books from the Library because they find it difficult for themselves, but some people find reading books interesting because it teaches us about things that we need to know.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Planning

Walt: Write a planning for your template to make sure you know what you're writing about.
Our task was to use this planning so we know what we're going to write and that we won't take so long to know what we're going to write. It is really easy to make a plan so you know what you're going to write without having to take so long, that will just waste your time because you used up most of your time to think on what you're going to write in the template. I find this very easy and it wasn't so easy to write it in, but the hard part was trying to find a reason why people borrow books from the Library.

Te Taiao o Tamaki- Multiplication Pyramid

Walt: Find a Fraction of a Number.
Our task was to use as much maths skills that we have learnt about during our maths time session, we also had to make sure that we can use place value knowledge, timetables, skip counting and to use our doubles and halves till we can reach the top of the pyramid. It was quite difficult to solve because we had all these ideas, but we could only use one idea and we had to stick to it.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Fractions of a Number

Walt: Find a fraction of a number.

In Room 4, we have been learning about fractions of a number. The whole class was always doing fractions because we were always struggling with our fractions and we were all at stage 4. It was a little bit hard in the beginning because we didn't know our fractions and it was really hard for us. But we all started to get fractions and it started to get easier for us. The more we knew about fractions, it was more easier for us to focus in.

Te Taiao O Tamaki - Maori Class - (Term 1)

Walt: Create a Presentation with the knowledge that you know about your country and create some information about it, by using a Whakapapa.

Our task was to create a Whakapapa about ourselves and everything that we know about the place that we came from. This was assigned to us from Whae Kelly and she wanted us to put as much effort as we can to show the world what we have learnt about during our Maori Classes. I have learnt a lot of things from Whae Kelly and she has been a great teacher at teaching us all these amazing things that she has learnt in University before coming to our wonderful school.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Whole of a Set

Walt: Identify and sort fractions of a number.

This week we have been learning about Fractions and our class is really average at fractions. So we decide to work on word problems so we can get some knowledge that we need to know about fractions so we can move up a level. At the end of the year, we should be at level 7 or 8 because those are the levels we are suppose to be on. The work was kind of difficult, but I managed my time to do it by myself so I can improve more on my maths work.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Kiwi Kids News 2K17

Walt: Find evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand key themes and messages.

Our task was to finish everything off before we could come onto this work. I was an early bird so I had to finish it off. Once you have finished everything else, we had to do a Recall and Thinking to each text that we read and making sure that our answers are correct. Then we had to post our answers in our own presentations that we have created on our own. The work was really difficult, but at the same time, it was easy because I managed to go through some questions.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Add Using Doubles

Walt: Use doubles to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.

Mrs Judd was trying to warm our heads up so we can get started with our maths, we had to work on our addition and subtraction just so Mrs Judd knows that we know the simple ones before we go onto other hard working problems. We also had to check our addition and subtraction properly so that people can see if we are right or not.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Blog Post

What I think "Te Taiao o Tamaki?" means for me is that we need to help people to stop polluting our waters and oceans because we never know if fresh water will still be around in the future. The reason why Mr Burt chose this topic "Te Taiao o Tamaki" is because not enough people are looking after our environment and they are not taking care of our trees and birds.

The environment is really important to us locals, but the only way we can save our fresh water is to stop polluting our oceans and take our rubbish into bins so our environment could be clean and fresh. Oceans, Streams, Lakes and Rivers are no dumping places where you can throw your rubbish everywhere, that is why we have bins. Make sure you or your friend are doing the right thing and not dumping your rubbish on the ground.

That is why lot's of our beautiful sea creatures and land animals are dying because we are not putting out rubbish in the right places and also we need to stop polluting the air or ocean because it is very dangerous and we never know if their will be any fresh water left in the whole wide world. This is what "Te Taiao o Tamaki" means to me and what "The Environment of Tamaki" is.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Who my role model is and why?

Walt: Plan for a piece of explanation writing.
- Use the' Title - Introduction - Information - Conclusion (TIIC) structure.
“Who is your role model?”. There is only one person that I really look up to and he is my role model. “Why are they so important to you and why do you look up to them?”, there are lot’s of reasons why people have role models, it is because they want to be just like them or they want something that their role model has.

My role model is Osamu Tezuka. The reason why I look up to him is because his talents are splendid and he created something that nobody can take away from him. I’ve always looked up to him because he created Anime and I’ve always wanted the same talent as him. In life, I want to create my own Manga and Anime to show people he was a great and creative person.

Osamu Tezuka teaches people about life through his animated work and to show people what life's all about. I have always been inspired by his beautiful work. His animated cartoons have helped me to understand what life can be and how hard people try to do their best in anything they come across.

He teaches me that life is not a game and that you need to take it very seriously. In the future, you will need to work every day to be able to do things that you have always wanted to do in life. He encouraged me that I can try new things that I have never done before, he has also showed me that I can do anything in the future.

These are the reasons why I look up to Osamu Tezuka and why he plays an important role in my life. He is one of the role model that I look up to and I have lot’s of information why he is a role model to me. I always look up to him because he is a very special person to me. So, “Who is your role model and why are they so important to you?”

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Thirst by Paul Mason

Walt: Find Evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand the key themes and messages.

In Mrs Ilaoa's literacy class, we were reading a text called thirst that has a little boy who steals another family's water from their tank because he is trying to help his family out. The reason being, is because his family is poor and they have no money to pay the company to bring water to their house. The little boy and his little sister's uniforms have not been washed for a month because they don't have enough water to even take a shower. Then we had to do a Character Web that explains everything about the main character. Also we had to answer a lot of questions that we had to think really hard about.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Water Worries

Walt: Find evidence from the text to support my answers. Analyse the text to understand key themes and messages.

This week in Mrs lloa's literacy class, we have been really busy with working on with both of our reading presentations. Also this week, we had lot's of things we had to do so then we could understand what we are reading about and we could use that knowledge in both of our texts. We had to understand the key themes and also had to examine through the texts to get our answers so we can answer our questions properly. They're were also some hidden messages in the text while we were reading it.

Te Taiao o Tamaki - Factions Word Problems

Walt: Identify and sort fractions of a number.

Task: Our task was to work out how we got the answer, either by doing our work in our maths books or take a screenshot to show how we worked out the question. It took a little while because we had to think really hard to use different other ways to work out the answer.  The thing that I could find really difficult was working out the last 2 questions because I needed a lot of time to solve the problem. I really enjoyed doing fractions because I'm starting to get my fractions a lot and I also think that it will help me with the rest of my maths.
