Mrs Judd's Extension Work!

See if you can solve these word problems. Show how you worked it out!! (use brackets to expand numbers)

1. It rained 1.35 inches on Saturday and 1.98 inches on Sunday. How much did it rain on Saturday and Sunday combined?

1.35 + 1.98 = 3.33
(10 + 10 = 20) + (0.3 + 0.9 = 1.2) + (.5 + .8 = 1.3)

2. There were 7.6 litres of water in Jacob's bathtub. Then 2.9 litres drained out. How much water is left in the bathtub?

7.6 - 2.9 = 4.7
(0.7 - 0.2 = 0.5) + (.6 - .9 = 0.3)

3. A carpenter bought a piece of wood that was 6.15 meters long. Then he sawed 2.14 meters off the end. How long is the piece of wood now?

6.15 - 2.14 = 4.01
(60 - 20 = 40) + (0.1 - 0.1 = 0) + (.5 - .4 = .1)

4. A chef bought 4.2 kilograms of almonds and 7.8 kilograms of pecans. How many kilograms of nuts did the chef buy in all?

4.2 + 7.8 = 12
(40 + 70 = 110) + (0.2 + 0.8 = 1)

5. It snowed 8.9 inches on Monday and 3.9 inches on Tuesday. How much did it snow on Monday and Tuesday combined?

8.9 + 3.9 = 12.8
(80 + 30 = 110) + (0.9 + 0.9 = 1.8)

6. It rained 0.97 cm on Monday. On Tuesday, it rained 0.4 cm less than on Monday. How much did it rain on Tuesday? READ CAREFULLY-THIS ONE WILL TRY AND TRICK YOU!
0.97 - 0.4 = 1.05
(0 - 0 = 0) + (0.9 - 0.4 = 0.5) + .7

7. Omar spent Saturday picking berries at a berry farm. In the morning, he picked 3.61 kg of berries. In the afternoon, he picked 2.4 kgs. How many pounds of berries did Omar pick in all?

3.61 + 2.4 = 6.01
(30 + 20 = 50) + (0.6 + 0.4 = 1) + .1

8. A bee colony produced 0.91 pounds of honey, but bears ate 0.9 pounds of it. How much honey remains?
0.91 - 0.9 = 0.01
(0 - 0 = 0) + (0.9 - 0.9 = 0) + .9

9. Oscar bought 5.87 pounds of melon and 3.18 pounds of cherries. How much fruit did he buy in all?
5.87 + 3.18 = 9.05
(50 + 30 = 80) + (0.8 + 0.1 = 0.9) + (.7 + .8 = 1.5)

10. Vince mixed 0.8 grams of salt into a pot of soup he was cooking. Before he served the soup, Vince added 0.25 grams of salt. How much salt did Vince put into the soup in all?
0.8 + 0.25 = 1.05
(0 + 0 = 0) + (0.8 + 0.2 = 1) + .5

Mrs Judd's Math Problems

WALT add and subtract numbers involving decimals
Make sure you show how you worked it out! Using brackets ( ) to expand numbers out

3.4 + 6.7 = 10.1
(30 + 60 = 90) + (0.4 + 0.7 = 1.1)

12.8 + 9 = 21.8
(10 + 9 = 19) + (0.2 + 0.8 = 1.1)

23.2 + 38.5 = 61.7
(20 + 30 = 50) + (0.3 + 0.8 = 1.1) + (.2 + .5 = 7)

10 + 0.7 = 10.7
(10 + 0 = 10) + (.0 + .7 = 7)

47.5 + 61.8 = 109.3
(400 + 600 = 1000) + (0.7 + 0.1 = 0.8) + (.5 + .8 = 1.3)

18 + 4.8 = 22.8
(18 + 4 = 22) + (.8 + .0 = .8)

33.5 + 7.6 = 41.1
(30 + 7 = 37) + (0.3 + 0.6 = 0.9) + (.5 + .6 = 1.1)

68 + 12.3 = 80.3
(68 + 10 = 78) + (0.2 + 0.0 = 0.2) + (.3)

19.5 + 19.5 = 39
(19 + 19 = 38) + (0.5 + 0.5 = 1.1)

172 + 17.2 = 189.9
(100 + 10 = 110) + (0.7 + 0.7 = 1.4) + (.2 + .2 = 4)

23.3 + 4.4 = 27.7
(20 + 40 = 60) + (0.3 + 0.4 = 0.7) + (.4)

101 + 110.1 = 211.1
(10 + 10 = 20) + (1.0 + 0.1 = 1) + (.1 + .1 = .2)

SUBTRACTION!!!!!

8.3 - 6.6 = 1.7
(80 - 60 = 20) + (0.3 - 0.6 = 0.3)

13.7 - 9 = 4.7
(10 - 9 = 1) + (0.3 + 0.7 = 1)

29.9 - 10.5 = 19.4
(20 - 10 = 10) + (0.9 - 0.0 = 0.9) + (.9 - .5 = .4)

10 - 4.7 = 5.3
(10 - 4 = 6) + (.7)

40.4 - 1.9 = 38.5
(40 - 10 = 30) + (0.4 - 0.9 = 0.5)

11.6 - 3.8 = 7.8
(10 - 3 = 7) + (0.1 - 0.3 = 0.2) + (.6 - .8 = 0.2)

37.2 - 3.1 = 34.1
(30 - 3 = 27) + (0.7 - 0.1 = 0.6) + (.2)

68.4 - 22.3 = 46.1
(60 - 20 = 40) + (0.8 - 0.2 = 0.6) + (.4 - .3 = .1)

30 - 17.5 = 12.5
(30 - 10 = 20) + (0.7 - 0.5 = 0.2)

262 - 26.2 = 235.8
(20 - 20 = 0) + (0.6 - 0.6 = 0) + (0.2 - 0.2 = 0)

503.3 - 54.4 = 448.9
(50 - 50 = 0) + (0 - 4 = 4) + (0.3 - 0.4 = 0.1) + (.4)

903 - 130.8 = 772.2
(90 - 10 = 80) + (0 - 3 = 3) + (0.3 - 0.0 = 0.3) + (.8)

Statistics Presentation

Walt: Identify and use tenths to make numbers.
Our task was to use our statistics knowledge to solve out all of the questions. We needed to learn how to identify decimals, by going back to learning more about our statistics before we could go further with our decimals. Some of the questions were hard to answer because it resolved a lot of thinking to do.

Tenths 2k17

Walt: Recognise tenths

Our learning intention was to use our thinking skills to show what we have been learning over the past few years. It was a hard work to do it because, we needed lot's of our fractions and decimals knowledge to get the answers. In some of the questions, there were some easy questions to answer, without using much of your thinking.

Persuasive Writing - Planning

Walt: Plan out a persuasive piece of writing.

Our task was to watch episode 3. We needed to watch while thinking what planning is. Then we had to complete our activity about our audience and what our reasons are to why we want that. It was a hard work to do and it required a lot of thinking to know what our topic and our three specific reasons to backup our topic.
