What is Matter?

          What is Matter made of?

People are made out of matter, Matter are the stuff of the universe and it is the substance of a physical object is made out of. Matter is something that is made out of Particles, particles are tiny building blocks that make up matter.

The devices that we use and animals are also made out of particles. Since Particles are so tiny, your eyes are going to be hard to see them for yourself because if you use a Microscope, then you will be able to see them clearly because you are using something that is related to science.

Just picture the particles as super small balls packed together as an object and how an object looks and behaves which we call it property. Another word which we call how an object looks and how the shape behaves is called “Property”. The word “Property” is a science word for a distinguishing quality of an object made of matter. Like its colour shape size of the temperature or weight.

Water Experiments 2016

Walt: Create a presentation with experiments that includes water.

Task: Our task was to create a presentation and put in as much experiments that includes water in the experiment. We had to also research on Google so we could see what kinds of funky experiments are out there for us to show. What we had to do was to either make a Google Doc or a Presentation to show what experiment we are doing and also what are the instructions and what steps you need to follow.

Rust Task Poster

Walt: Create a Poster about Rust and use your information that you have put into a Doc or into a presentation and make it more interesting.
What have you learnt: I have learnt lot's of things from the previous information that I have already researched and I managed to find lot's of fun facts about Rusting. The information was a little bit hard to find because it took a long time to research and I finally managed to find more information about Rusting.

Fast Rust Task

Fast Rust Task

Rust

Task: Work on this Doc together with a partner.

What 3 ingredients are needed for rust to occur.
IronWaterOxygen from the Air

Write a brief paragraph explaining the rusting process (why rusting occurs)
Rust is usually used to refer to a very common, reddish - brown compound called an iron oxide. Iron oxide is formed when iron and oxygen react in the presence of water or moisture in the air. Iron oxide is is very common, because iron reacts easily with oxygen in the air.

How could you prevent something from rusting?
Whenever you get iron, water and oxygen together, you get rust. So the best way to prevent it is to keep them apart, that’s what paint does. Or the spray - on wax and oil coatings that the car protection companies sell. Keep your tools dry and wipe down your bike after a ride. Keep the water away and it can’t rust.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.
What I have learnt from the information that I know is that metal can rust really easily unless it is in contact with Iron, Water or Oxygen from the air that flies around us. I have also learnt why rusting occurs is because when you have iron and the oxygen from the air comes and glides through the iron & water is pushing against the iron, it will make the iron rust and turn into a brown colour.

Letter of Support - Kent Manning & Libby

To Kent Manning & Libby,

To Kent Manning & Libby who has been living in Christchurch, I am so sorry for your loved ones who have passed away in the Earthquake that has occurred your way. My reaction towards the earthquake is quite shocking because I know that it isn’t a nice place to live but it is also really dear towards some of you.

I hope that you would cheer up and accept my letter of support to show that I may not know how it feels to lose your loved ones, but I can feel the same pain as you. My advice towards you is that if you want to live a better life then try and make the right decision for you and your family to either move on with your life or prepare yourselves for the next earthquake.

Yours Sincerely,

Roimata

How to make a Basic Paper Plane

Step 1. Use a regular paper.

Step 2. Fold the paper in half, the orientation of the paper should be vertical, and the crease should be along this middle, longer side. Make sure the corners of the paper matches up. Unfold the paper again. Do not turn it over.

Step 3. Fold one corner of the paper into the center of the paper and do the same thing with the other corner. The two outer edges of the paper should touch each other at the crease line.

This should form a triangular flaps on each side of the paper. The top should be in the shape of a point.

The bottom of the edge of the flap should be a straight line.

Step 4. Fold the flap again towards the middle of the paper. Take the top corner of the outside edge and fold it towards the middle. Just like in step 3, the edges should meet up along the vertical crease in the middle.

The paper should look like a dart, with a much narrower triangular flap on each sides. Most of the paper now will be in the shape of a triangle, with a point at the top.

Step 5. Fold the paper in half. When folding the paper in half, make the fold along the vertical crease. You are folding one side of the paper on top of the other, so it should match up exactly. Run your finger or a blunt - edged tool along the crease to make it sharp.

Step 6. Then your paper plane should look like this example that I have made:

Mixture Problems 2

Walt: Solving problems using the most effective strategies.

Task: Our task was to finish the presentation and this presentation is just like the first Mixture problems but is has different questions. We had to use our knowledge that we already know and we had to try and use different equations that can work to solve the problem out and to get the correct answer. What I have learnt is using different strategies to solve different problems and what I can improve on in my maths next time.

Mixture Problems 1

Walt: Solving problems using the most effective strategies.

Task: Our task was to use our knowledge that we already know about our maths and what we have already learnt in the past few years that we have been to this school. The other text that was next to the other one was to show us what we can use and it was giving us some hints about what we are trying to work out for ourselves. Once we finished the first slides, we had another slide that was only for experts but we had no choice but to do it because it was all about exercising our brains and getting better with our own knowledge that we have already learnt.

Angles Poster

Walt: Understand Shapes

Task: Our task was to create a poster with as many information that we can to show people what a angle is and what their meaning is behind the word "Angle?" The Google Poster was kind of easy but hard at the same time because it was kind of hard to find some information about angles and looking for some pictures to show what we are talking about.

Properties of 2 and 3 Dimensional Shapes

Walt: Understand Shapes

Task: Our task was to use a warm up and we had to play a game with a partner and the game was called "Who am I" but we had to test our other partner what kind of shape we are by describing how many corners the shape has and the sides of the shape.  This presentation was a little bit easy because we had to add some vocabulary words that we use in angles and we also had to press on slide 3 to look at the link to know what kind of vocabulary's we can use.

Mr Wiseman - Come & See

Walt: Watch another Manaiakalani Film Festival Movie from any school and try leaving a positive comment on their class site.
Task: Our task was to blog post something about each movie that we have enjoyed and write down what was one of our favourite parts in the movie and we had to try and leave a positive comment on each blog that we have been watching the movie. My favourite part of this movie was when Sulieti tried to do the bridge on the sand, but then she failed and Aysha was the only one that did the hand stand.

Room 8 - Saint Patrick's Eat right, Energise

Walt: Watch a Manaiakalani Film Festival Movie from any school and try to post it on our blog.

Task: Our task was to watch another Manaiakalani Film Festival Movie from any school and we had to try and leave a positive comment on their blogs and make a blog post about their movie. This movie was about eating right food and we had to energise better, this movie was made from a lovely school called Saint Patrick's school in Room 8. Their food looked really delicious and they did good instructions.

Room 5 - Be Cyber Smart!

Walt: Watch a Manaiakalani Film Festival Movie and try commenting on that class blog.

Task: Our task was to watch a Manaiakalani Film Festival Movie and we had to comment at the same time to show people that we enjoyed the movie. My favourite part of this movie was when the girls walked up to Simon and asked him what he was doing because the girls saw Simon on his phone. Another one of my favourite part was when Uli was Miss Fosita and he was wearing a dress and he was trying to talk like a teacher.

Room 4 Manaiakalani Film Festival - History

Walt: Watch a Film Festival movie and try to comment on each movie you have watched.

Task: Our task was to watch any movie from the 2015 Film Festival movie from any of the Manaiakalani schools. This was one of my favourite Manaiakalani Film Festival movie because it has some old pictures of the Year 8's when they were just kids. The song in the background was lovely because it was describing how it was the Year 8's last time at Pt England School and they will be going into College.

Pseudoscience Task

Pseudoscience Task

Walt: Find and link information across a range of texts

Task:
Work on this Doc together with a partner.

What was the author's main message in pseudoscience
The author’s main message was if people believe in “Carrots can help you see in the Dark?” or “Chocolate can give you good memories” then you have to try and find that out yourself to see if it works when people think these things are true.

Another main message that the author was explaining about “Pseudoscience” is when people believe something that they don’t know, they should try and experiment that one subject that everybody believes so they can see if the statement is true or not.

What are some of the differences between scientists and advertisers?
ScientistsAdvertisers
ExperimentsSelling Products
Systematic ActivityCommunicating through Mass Media.

Write 3 sentences explaining something new you’ve learned from this reading.

What I have learnt about Pseudoscience is that the word ‘Pseudoscience’ is a collection of beliefs that people believe or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on a scientific method.

I have also learnt that Pseudoscience is any body of alleged knowledge, methodology, belief, or practice that claims to be scientific, but does not fit with the actual nature of science. The word “Pseudo” means fake.

The surest way to spot a fake is to know as much as possible about the real thing - in this case, about science itself. Knowing science does not mean simply knowing scientific facts - it means understanding the nature of science.

Rewriting Instructions

Instructions should have clear, simple steps so you don’t confuse the person reading them.
Can you make these various instructions easier to understand?

Pick up an egg, gently hit it against the side of a bowl and empty the contents into a clean bowl.
First you pick up 1 egg, carefully hit the egg against the side of the bowl and try to empty the contents into a clean bowl.
Open the fridge and take out the butter. Take off the lid. Get a knife and use it to scoop some butter. Rub the knife onto the toast.

What is a Fair Test?

Walt: Create a Poster and put in different interesting information that you know about "Fair Test?"

Task: Our task was to create a poster and put in as much information as we can to show our knowledge on what we know about what a Fair Test is. We had to add lot's of interesting information on the poster so people know what a fair test is and what I'm comparing it to because it is the same as a Variable. I have learnt many things about what a fair test is and I'm looking forward to knowing more information or examples about what a fair test is.

Algebra - Week 4

Walt: Simplify algebraic equations

Task: Our task was to make a copy of this presentation and it is all about Algebra. First we had to try and understand what Vocabulary and Basic Definitions are and they also included what an Equation is and what it means. There are different parts of an equation better than saying "That thingy there"!" and you have no clue what it means. What I have learnt from this presentation was that I managed to learn a lot more about Algebra and it gave me lot's of knowledge about some maths problems.

PQR Maths Problem

Walt: Use the example on the first slide and try using that example that you have seen and use it throughout the other slides to help you work out the question.

Task: Our task was to make a copy of this presentation and use the first example of the slide to show us what we have to do to complete the other slides to a high standard. What I have learnt from this presentation is using different algebraic expressions meaning in terms of pouring and doing the following work. Some of the questions were really hard for me at first, until I started reading the question over and over again so I can understand what it is trying to do.

Team 5 Test - Maths Test

Walt: Write a blogpost about "Why is it so important to do a test" and why do you have to do a test.

Image result for TestImage result for Maths
Today Team 5 has been getting prepared for our Maths Test and that we had to study as hard as we can to get better so that we are ready to to improve on our Maths Test. Everybody moved straight into their maths class because that was the first thing that we had to do. All the students had to try and bring their own Pencil or Pen to their maths class so we can work out our answers.

Before I knew it, the whole block went absolutely silent and it was time for everybody to stay focus on our maths test and making sure that we don't get distracted. The reason why it is so important to set a test is because you can compare what you have done in the beginning at how well you have done till the end.

If you want to have a great education or a great life, then you have to study and do well at all your test subjects before moving on with your life. If you do well in your test, then you can make it into a great university and have a job and a driving license.

  • No talking to the person next to you/Don't try cheating because that means that you're not trying your best at the test.

  • Try using these strategies to help you out when you have come across hard maths problems that you don't know how to solve?
  1. Process of Elimination - Means that you read the question and you try looking at all your options that you have. Then you can cross out each option that you think doesn't suit the question.

     2. Identify Key Words - You have to try and search for all the keywords that you have found in the         question and try understanding what it means.

3. Read Question 3 Times - This means that you have to try and read the question 3 times before answering the question
